About Griffon Aviation

Griffon Aviation trains private pilots from Paphos International Airport on the west coast of Cyprus. The airport is a controlled, commercial field, so every student, including anyone booking a trial flight, needs an airport security pass. The school asks for a scanned passport or ID in advance and the pass takes several days to be approved, so a trial flight cannot usually be arranged on the same day.

The PPL(A) course is quoted as a single figure that covers the minimum 45 hours of flight training and the full theoretical course. Ground school is a blended format: around 100 hours of distance learning backed by mock exams and revision sessions at the school, which run on some weekdays and on Saturdays. Students are not required to pass their theory exams before starting to fly, so flying and ground school can run in parallel.

Payment works differently from a fixed package. A non-refundable deposit of €2,000 is paid at the start, and flight training is then invoiced in 15-hour blocks. The student's account has to stay at zero or in credit, so in practice flying is paid for in advance in instalments rather than as one lump sum. Dual instruction and solo flying are charged at different hourly rates, and both rates are quoted before VAT, which in Cyprus is 19%.

On top of the course price the student pays for materials, the nine DCA theory exams, the examiner for the skill test, the licence issue fees charged by the Department of Civil Aviation, a Class 2 medical, an English language proficiency assessment at the end of the course, and a €5 airport pass. An optional computer-based training package is also available. The school says a student can use its headsets, so buying one is optional.

Griffon has not yet told us which aircraft types it uses for PPL training, how many it operates, or how many hours its students typically take to reach the skill test. Those gaps are marked on this page and will be filled when the school confirms them.
